Olive Ridley SEA TURTLES
Learn all about Arribadas (massive turtle arrivals often numbering in excess of 100,000 females) and the life cycle of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. From nest digging, egg laying, hatchlings emerging and racing for their lives to the sea.
• Playa Ostional, on the Nicoya Peninsula, with the second largest numbers of returning turtles in the world, is one of 7 beaches on the planet where massive arrivals of egg laying female sea turtles nest. This phenomena occurs all 12 months of the year and over the course of a five-day arribada, nesting turtles will leave up to 10 million eggs on the beach of Ostional. The largest Arribadas happen September thru November.
• Tambor Bay Turtles is a turtle rescue operation and nursery where sea turtles nests are secured and brought to a safe environment for incubation before the babies are released back into the wild. Their goal is to protect the remaining sea turtles and produce enough hatchlings to at least maintain and grow the population naturally.
